Can anyone recommend a good laptop?

My laptop died recently. It was renewed, and although it was good that only lasted six months, so I'm looking for a new brand. I need a laptop for college, and it was really helpful, but I'm going to college in a couple of years, I am looking for a laptop as good as I can afford. I would be able to play computer games on it, although I am aware that computers laptops are not as good as the PC. My current budget (due to motor insurance) is about 400 pounds, but I might be able to stretch another £ 50-100. Can anyone recommend a good geal, or give me some help choosing?

IBM ThinkPad is excellent. Good price and high performance level.
